First Aid for Mental Health FAA level 1

“Mental Health First Aid Awareness”

The First Aider for Mental Health offers initial support to someone, be it a work colleague or someone else, (much as a First Aider would), but to those who are experiencing emotional or psychological distress. This course increases awareness of mental health stigmas that discourage people from speaking out. You will become aware of how to initiate a non-judgmental conversation so that you can signpost the relevant help that is required.

  • Role and responsibilities of a First Aider 

  • The impact of mental health issues 

  • Mental health stigma 

  • Statistics

  • How to start a difficult conversation 

  • Non-judgmental listening skills

  • When to contact the emergency services 

  • The First Aider’s own health and emotions

  • Mental health continuum 

  • Mental health risk factors 

  • Early warning signs

  • What is stress and what causes it 

  • Effects of stress 

  • Coping strategies

  • Mental Health conditions:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety 

  • Psychosis 

  • Eating disorders

  • Suicide 

  • Self-harm
